anlässlich der 27. Jahreskongress der Gesellschaft für Orthopädisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin (GOTS) wurde gestern Abend der Sportarzt des Jahres 2012 geehrt. Die Wahl fiel in diesem Jahr auf den Wiener Karl-Heinz Kristen.

Sportarzt des Jahres 2012: Karl-Heinz Kristen (Wien)
Die Auszeichnung zum „Sportarzt des Jahres“ wird jährlich von der GOTS im Zuge des Jahreskongresses verliehen. Das Vorschlagsrecht steht dem Vorsitzenden der Verbandsärzte, dem Präsidenten und den Vizepräsidenten der GOTS zu. Vorschläge können auch Sportärzte aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz sowie das Präsidium der „Deutschen Gesellschaft für Sportmedizin und Prävention“ einreichen. Über die Auszeichnung als „Sportarzt des Jahres“ entscheidet der Vorstand der GOTS mit einfacher Mehrheit. Voraussetzung für die Nominierung sind zwei Bürgen aus dem Vorstand der GOTS sowie ein weiterer Bürge aus dem Vorstand des betreuten Sportverbandes. Der „Sportarzt des Jahres“ muss einige Voraussetzungen erfüllen, unter anderem die kontinuierliche Betreuung einer Nationalmannschaft einer olympischen Sportart als Verbandsarzt bei Europameisterschaften, Weltmeisterschaften und/oder Olympischen Spielen, absolute Zuverlässigkeit in Sachen Antidoping, aktiver Einsatz im betreuenden Verband zur Vermeidung von Sportverletzungen und Sportschäden, strikte Einhaltung einer ethisch sauberen Medizin sowie überdurchschnittliche Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der praktischen Sportmedizin. 2012 heißt der Sportarzt des Jahres Karl-Heinz Kristen aus Wien (Österreich).
Ein Bewertungsgremium der Gesellschaft für Orthopädisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin (GOTS) wählte Dr. Karl-Heinz Kristen nun zum Sportarzt des Jahres 2012. „Karl-Heinz Kristen macht seit vielen Jahren eine herausragende Betreuung von Sportlern nicht nur bei Großevents wie Snowboard-Weltmeisterschaften oder dem Freestyle-Surf- und Kite-Worldcup, sondern vor allem in seiner Sportklinik. Er hat großes Engagement in die Betreuung neuer Sportarten – früher Snowboard, Inline Skating und Windsurfen, heute Kitesurfen, Wakeboarden oder Standup-Paddeln – gezeigt“, heißt es in der Begründung des Präsidiums zur Wahl. „Dr. Karl-Heinz Kristen hat sein Wissen stets in vorbildlicher Weise an die jungen Kollegen weitergegeben. Dazu ist er bis zum heutigen Tag ein äußerst aktiver und begeisterter Sportler und hat trotzdem seinen Charakter und seine Individualität beibehalten.“
Karl-Heinz Kristen wurde am 4. Oktober 1962 in Wien geboren. Als ältester von vier Brüdern waren von ihm von frühester Kindheit an Teamgeist und Kompromissbereitschaft gefragt. Der Vater, Univ. Prof. Dr. Herbert Kristen, förderte als Leichtathlet und Handballer sowie begeisterter Segler die motorischen Fähigkeiten. Die Mutter sorgte als Cellistin und Pianistin für eine musikalische Ausbildung und damit für einen guten Ausgleich bei den vier wilden Buben. Durch seinen Vater, der Facharzt für Orthopädie und später Primarius war, kam Karl-Heinz Kristen schon früh in Kontakt mit dem medizinischen Tätigkeitsfeld. Dies war sicher mit ein Grund, warum er sich nach dem Besuch des Akademischen Gymnasiums in Wien entschloss, Medizin zu studieren. Entscheidend für den weiteren Verlauf des Studiums waren die Sommerferien Ende des zweiten Semesters.
Von der praxisfernen Ausrichtung des Medizinstudiums enttäuscht, war damals der Entschluss, einen Studienwechsel vorzunehmen, eigentlich schon gefasst. Ein Besuch in Frankreich mit einem kleinen Praktikum an einer Uniklinik entwickelte sich jedoch zur einem alles verändernden Schlüsselerlebnis: Ein dortiger Ärztestreik bewirkte, dass der Medizinstudent mit den Worten „Sie sind Medizinstudent? – Gut, Sie sind jetzt unser Arzt“ empfangen wurde. Nach vierwöchigem französichem Intensivtraining auf der Orthopädie und in der Unfallambulanz war Kristen sicher, dass Medizin absolut das Richtige für ihn ist.
Der Sport, besonders verbunden mit Natur und einer ordentlichen Herausforderung, waren immer ein wichtiger Lebensbestandteil für Karl-Heinz Kristen. Mit drei Jahren stand er auf den Ski, mit sieben Jahren saß er im Segelboot, mit 13 Jahren nahm er die Herausforderung an, eines der ersten Windsurfbretter in Europa zu bändigen. Snowboarden folgte – und das zu einer Zeit, als einige Skifahrer, die der damals schmalen und langen „Bretter“ müde geworden waren, selbst Snowboards bauten. Karl-Heinz Kristen war einer davon.
Auch beim Inline-Skaten war Kristen nicht nur als Sportler aktiv, sondern entwickelte mit einem kleinen Team einen innovativen „Step-in-Schuh”, der sogar mehrfach prämiert wurde: Das funktionelle und ergonomische Design dieses Inline-Skate-Schuhs hat den Best Poster Award bei der GOTS Jahrestagung 1996 sowie den Design Award “Design Innovation” des Design-Zentrums Nordrhein-Westfalen erhalten.
Medizinstudent und Wettkampfathlet
Während der Studienzeit war Karl-Heinz Kristen im Windsurf-Worldcup erfolgreich. Bei den vielen Trainingsaufenthalten und Wettkämpfen an den Surfstränden dieser Welt war das Medizin-Lehrbuch immer dabei. Finanziert hat sich der Medizinstudent diese doch kostenintensive Wettkampfsportart durch eine eigene Shape-Werkstatt, in der er Surfboards vom Shape über Design bis hin zur Kunststoff-Verarbeitung produziert hat. Eigenständige Medienarbeit und Sponsor-Verträge als Werksfahrer für F2 halfen ebenfalls. 1985 verhinderten die Studienregeln das Antreten bei drei Prüfungen wegen zu kurzer Vorlesungs-Inskriptionszeiten. Anstatt eine Studienzeitverkürzung zu beantragen, wurde der Bausparvertrag – ein Geschenk der Großmutter – „geopfert“ und in eine Weltreise investiert, die so lange dauerte, bis keine Studienzeit-Limitierungen mehr hinderlich war. Die Resultate bei den Windsurf-Regatten waren danach deutlich besser…
Beruflicher Werdegang
1987, im Alter von 24 Jahren, promovierte Karl-Heinz Kristen zum Dr. med. univ. 1994 beendete er die Facharztausbildung als Orthopäde und 1998 die Ausbildung im Additivfach Sportorthopädie. Seine orthopädische Ausbildung hat er an der orthopädischen Abteilung des Otto-Wagner-Krankenhauses unter der Leitung von Prof. Schwägerl mit dem Schwerpunkt Rheumaorthopädie abgeschlossen, seine Sportorthopädische Ausbildung an der orthopädischen Abteilung Donauspital / SMZ Ost unter der Leitung von Prof. Engel. An dieser Abteilung hat Dr. Kristen in seiner Funktion als Oberarzt Spezialambulanzen aufgebaut und geleitet:
- Fußambulanz: Fuß- und Sprunggelenkschirurgie
- Knieambulanz: Gelenkserhaltende und Arthroskopische Kniegelenkschirurgie
- Rehablilitationsambulanz: Wiederherstellung der allgemeinen und sozialen Integration sowie orthopädisch technische Versorgung
Derzeit leitet Karl-Heinz Kristen die Sportklinik Wien – ein Kompetenzzentrum für Sportorthopädie mit einer öffentlichen Praxis sowie das Fusszentrum Wien – ein Kompetenzzentrum für die Analyse und Therapie von Fuß- und Sprunggelenkserkrankungen. Auch bei der Organisation der Sportmedizin-Kongresse in Podersdorf seit 2002, der GOTS-Treffen Österreich sowie der internationalen Sportkongresse 2007, 2008 und 2010 in Ägypten war er tätig.
Der Mensch hinter dem Mediziner
Privat ist Kristen glücklich verheiratet und hat zwei Töchter. Soweit es seine Zeit zulässt, ist er immer noch gerne sportlich aktiv, und zwar in vielfältiger Hinsicht: Segeln, Surfen, Windsurfen, Kitesurfen, Snowboard, Schifahren, Laufen, Bike, Fitness und Yoga. Persönlich ist ihm Neugier, immer wieder Neues zu versuchen und zu entwickeln, sehr wichtig, wobei sein Motto dabei immer lautet: „Und es geht doch!“ Grundsätzlich ist Kristen ein Feind des Multitasking. Für ihn besteht die wahre Kunst in der Fokussierung, ohne dabei den Überblick zu verlieren.
Seine Aufgabe als Sportorthopäde hat Kristen für sich klar definiert: „Ich betrachte den Sportler nicht als Sportler, sondern als Mensch, der eine ganz besondere Aufgabe erfüllen möchte und der ein ganz konkretes Ziel verfolgt. Es liegt nicht an uns, dieses Ziel anzuzweifeln oder dem Menschen diese Fähigkeiten abzusprechen. Ich möchte diese Menschen mit meinem Wissen und mit meinem Einsatz unterstützen, ihr Ziel zu erreichen.“
