Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

der Sportmediziner Dr. Lothar Schwarz aus Saarbrücken wurde soeben in München zum “Sportarzt des Jahres 2011” gekürt. Schwarz arbeitet im Institut für Sport- und Präventivmedizin an der Üniversität des Saarlandes und betreut als Mannschaftsarzt die deutschen Triathleten, die mit dem Weltmeistertitel von Daniel Ünger 2007, dem Olympiasieg von Jan Frodeno 2008, dem dritten WM-Platz von Maik Petzold 2009 und dem Vizeweltmeistertitel von Steffen Justus 2010 herausragende Erfolge erzielten. Die Laudatio hielt Prof. Dr. Wilfried Kindermann, der die hohen ethischen Ãœberzeugungen des Preisträgers hervorhob: “Der Erfolg von Jan Frodeno bei den Olympischen Spielen in Peking ist ein Indiz dafür, dass man auch in Ausdauersportarten Olympiasieger werden kann, ohne zu dopen.”

Der Sportarzt des Jahres 2011 heißt Dr. Lothar Schwarz aus Saarbrücken. Die Auszeichnung zum Sportarzt des Jahres wird jährlich von der Gesellschaft für Orthopädisch-Traumatologische Sportmedizin (GOTS) im Zuge des Jahreskongresses verliehen.

Lothar Schwarz wurde am 4. Oktober 1959 in Sankt Wendel im Saarland geboren und besuchte dort zunächst die Grundschule, später das Gymnasium. Schon als Kind und Jugendlicher war er sehr sportbegeistert und spielte vor allem gern Tennis und Fußball. Nach dem Abitur und der Wehrdienstzeit studierte er von 1979 bis 1985 Medizin an den Üniversitäten Heidelberg und Homburg. Als Assistenzarzt war Dr. Schwarz zunächst in der Inneren Medizin und in der Orthopädie tätig. 1987 wurde er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Sport-und Präventivmedizin der Üniversität des Saarlandes unter der Leitung von Üniv.-Prof. Dr. med. Wilfried Kindermann (seit 2008 Üniv.-Prof. Dr. med. Tim Meyer) sowie seit 1994 auch Leiter des personalärztlichen Dienstes der Üniversität
Saarbrücken. Seit über 20 Jahren betreut er am Institut für Sport- und Präventivmedizin Bundes-und Landeskaderathleten fast aller Sportarten. Er erlangte in dieser Zeit die Facharztanerkennung zum Allgemeinmediziner sowie die Zusatzbezeichnungen Sportmedizin, Akupunktur und Betriebsmedizin und promovierte 1990 über endogene Opioide und Sport.

Seit 1992 ist Dr. Schwarz an der Ausrichtung von über 100 sportmedizinischen Fort-und Weiterbildungsveranstaltungen in Kooperation mit verschiedenen Kliniken, sportwissenschaftlichen Institutionen und der Ärztekammer des Saarlandes beteiligt und hat mehrere internationale wissenschaftliche Kongresse organisiert. Zusammen mit Prof. Kindermann war er 1995 für die Organisation und wissenschaftliche Leitung des 34. Deutschen Sportärztekongress zuständig. Zudem ist er regelmäßig Mitgestalter von Anti-Doping-Veranstaltungen sowohl am Saarbrücker Olympiastützpunkt als auch überregional und seit 1990 Arzt im medizinischen Betreuungsteam der Nationalmannschaft beim Deutschen Leichtathletik Verband. Seit 2003 ist Dr. Lothar Schwarz ehrenamtlich verantwortlicher Mannschaftsarzt des Triathlon-Nationalteams und leitender Verbandsarzt. In dieser Betreuungstätigkeit war er bei insgesamt zehn Welt-und Europameisterschaften, den Olympischen Spielen 2008 in Peking sowie einer Vielzahl von Weltcup-Rennen und in zahlreichen Trainingslagern, insbesondere auch Höhentrainingslagern, im Einsatz. Seit 2008 ist er Mitglied der Medizinischen Kommission des Welt-Triathlon-Verbandes (ITÜ). Die Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sportmedizin und Prävention (DGSP) hat ihm 2003 für sein sportmedizinisches Engagement das goldene Ehrenzeichen verliehen.

Triathlon als Wettkampfkombination der drei klassischen Ausdauersportarten Schwimmen, Radfahren und Laufen ist sowohl leistungsphysiologisch als auch gesundheitlich von großem sportmedizinischem Interesse. In vielen Trainingslagern und internationalen Wettkämpfen haben ihn sowohl der Trainingsfleiß als auch die Trainingshärte der Triathleten besonders beeindruckt, ebenso wie ihre enorme Willensstärke, das Talent für höchste körperliche Fitness und mentale Stärke zu perfektionieren. Spitzensportler auf dem äußerst schwierigen Weg an die Weltspitze sportmedizinisch zu begleiten stellt für Dr. Schwarz eine äußerst interessante und instruktive Herausforderung dar. Die langjährige Erfahrung als Sportmediziner hilft ihm, um bei dieser Gratwanderung drohende Ãœber-und Fehlbelastungsgefahren zu erkennen und gesundheitliche Beeinträchtigungen zu vermeiden.

Neben den bereits genannten Tätigkeiten und Funktionen ist Dr. Lothar Schwarz ärztlicher Mitarbeiter am Olympiastützpunkt Rheinland-Pfalz/Saarland in Saarbrücken, Vorsitzender des Sportärzteverbandes Saar und Mitarbeiter und Berater der Saarbrücker Zeitung im Bereich „Sport und Gesundheit“ und hat zu dieser Thematik auch publiziert und mehrere Bücher verfasst, zuletzt 2010 im BLV-Verlag erschienen: „Das Herz-fit-Buch“.

Dr. Lothar Schwarz hat zwei erwachsene Kinder, lebt mit seiner Frau in Saarbrücken und genießt seit 25 Jahren in seiner Freizeit gerne die schöne saarländische Landschaft vom Rennrad aus. Geistige Entspannung sucht er beim Lesen und bei der Analyse von Schachpartien.

Die GOTS und der Sportarzt des Jahres

Das Vorschlagsrecht steht dem Vorsitzenden der Verbandsärzte, dem Präsidenten und den Vizepräsidenten der GOTS zu. Vorschläge können auch Sportärzte aus Deutschland, Österreich und der Schweiz sowie das Präsidium der „Deutschen Gesellschaft für Sportmedizin und Prävention“ einreichen. Ãœber die Auszeichnung als „Sportarzt des Jahres“ entscheidet der Vorstand der GOTS mit einfacher Mehrheit. Voraussetzung für die Nominierung sind zwei Bürgen aus dem Vorstand der GOTS sowie ein weiterer Bürge aus dem Vorstand des betreuten Sportverbandes. Der „Sportarzt des Jahres“ muss einige Voraussetzungen erfüllen, unter anderem die kontinuierliche Betreuung einer Nationalmannschaft einer olympischen Sportart als Verbandsarzt bei Europameisterschaften, Weltmeisterschaften und/oder Olympischen Spielen, absolute Zuverlässigkeit in Sachen Antidoping, aktiver Einsatz im betreuenden Verband zur Vermeidung von Sportverletzungen und Sportschäden, strikte Einhaltung einer ethisch sauberen Medizin sowie überdurchschnittliche Kenntnisse und Fähigkeiten auf dem Gebiet der praktischen Sportmedizin.
